CERTIFICATION CRITERIA FOR
WESTERN RETAILERS
Saddle and tack retailers must know about horses, riding, and the general equestrian world of western riding, or “current events”
One person present in the store at all times should be “an expert” in the following:
Saddle fitting to horse
Saddle fitting to rider
Types of saddles for various riding styles and how that affects fitting
Types of competitions and riding activities and tack used for each
Fitting bits
Fitting bridles
Assembling saddle/tack “package” of multiple items for customer
so that it is safe for intended riding activity
Riding safety
Leather knowledge and terms and how it affects rider safety
Hardware knowledge and terms and how it affects rider safety
Saddle accessories, such as saddlebags, cinches, latigos, etc.
Training equipment
Saddle knowledge about basic construction and “saddle anatomy”:
